Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) and our services.

Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure used to investigate lumps or masses. A thin needle is inserted into the area of concern to extract cells, which are then examined under a microscope to determine if they are benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Most patients experience only mild discomfort during FNAB. The procedure uses a very thin needle, and local anesthesia is typically not required. Some patients describe the sensation as similar to having blood drawn or receiving a vaccination.

No special preparation is required for most FNAB procedures. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, and bring any relevant medical records or previous test results. If you're taking blood thinners, please inform us before your procedure.

The actual FNAB procedure typically takes only 5-10 minutes. However, you should plan to be at the clinic for about an hour to complete registration, consultation, and post-procedure care.

Results are typically available within 1-2 hours after your procedure. Our staff will inform you about how and when you'll receive your results during your visit.

Standard FNAB is performed based on what the doctor can feel (palpation), while Ultrasound-guided FNAB uses real-time ultrasound imaging to guide the needle to the exact location of the mass, especially for smaller or deeper masses that may be difficult to feel accurately.

When performed by an experienced specialist like Dr. Salillas, FNAB is highly accurate. However, like any diagnostic procedure, it has limitations. Sometimes, a repeat FNAB or additional testing may be recommended for a definitive diagnosis.

FNAB is generally very safe with minimal risks. Some patients may experience slight bruising, swelling, or tenderness at the needle insertion site, which typically resolves within a few days. Serious complications are extremely rare.

While many patients are referred by their physicians, you can also schedule an FNAB directly with our clinic. However, we recommend consulting with your primary care physician about your symptoms before scheduling.

Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after FNAB. You may apply ice to the area if there is any discomfort. Avoid strenuous activities for 24 hours after the procedure, and contact us if you experience significant pain, swelling, or bleeding.

FNAB can be performed on various parts of the body, including thyroid, breast, lymph nodes, salivary glands, and soft tissue masses. Dr. Salillas specializes in FNAB for all these areas.
